Well I was right.

The professor created one blog, gave us an email and password to use, and now we post to that blog, not our own personal one.

Also, the assignment is different than I thought it was. We are blogging on how other people blog. For example, we examine one story, such as the peanut/salmonella outbreak, and look at how different news sources present it. I chose the peanut butter topic for this week, and I am looking at the New Yorks Times, Television (ABC, NBC), Huntington Post, and AU's very own Eagle. I have not written it yet, but that is it. Here is the link to our class blog:

I'm new at this!

So I have had blogs before, but they were in high school.

They were often about my feelings and what I did that day, and like, omg, I can't believe she said that to me.

This blog is NEW. It's about something NEW. And the topic is... NEWS.

Go figure.

Fundamentally, it is for my Writing for Mass Communication class, and since this project has not officially been assigned yet, I may have to export this thing somewhere else if blogger isn't good enough. Haha.

I thought I could just set this up quickly, write what I had to say, and be done. However, I got writers block just signing up! I sat here for about five or ten minutes staring at the "title of my blog" section. I did not want "Kate Pinkerton's Blog" because like some of the leads we're learning about write now, that is BORING! I looked up some random websites that discussed blog names, until I realized I wanted a play on words. Since the topic was news, that should be in the title. I figured plenty of words had "news" in them. I mean, the Newseum is right here in Washington, DC! Among the next few words I thought of, "nuisance." Almost all college students think that is what homework assignment is: a nuisance. Honestly, I do not think that this assignment is (especially since I started the assignment early haha), but it is a fun play on words and I'm sticking with it!

The whole reason I started this blog was to comment on an article in the New York Times yesterday. The point of the article was that the dress code is changing in the White House to a more casual look. Obama got caught in the oval office wearing just his shirt without his jacket. His reasoning was that he doesn't like the cold, and he's from Hawaii and so he likes it hot? Obama, Jackets keep you warm. Did you know that? Taking them off makes you cold. Instead, to make it warm like Hawaii, he turned up the heat and someone said that you could "grow orchids in there." Obama, that's not the way to help reduce energy use and promote environmental sustainability. No one seemed to mention that in the article, but I do understand the point of the article was the dress code. I love Obama and I am all about being casual, but cranking up the thermostat and taking off your jacket does not seem like a reasonable combination. In this case, keep it on, Obama.

Looking forward to this,
Kate
